BEHAVIORAL THERAPY SERVICES

PARENT TRAINING

Parent Training
Father and Children

My goal is to build your skill set to help your child foster their skills. Together, we will teach your child to advocate for themselves and experience feelings of success. For me, collaborating and working with a child’s parent is essential.

I am here to coach you and your child in how to utilize these skills to access life in a different and better way.  I take stock of all the things that are occurring at your home and what your family values. I assess and reassess to construct a plan, just like a personal trainer would update a training plan. I consistently evaluate what is working and not working to keep a functional plan in place for the betterment of your child and family.

We are in this together. There will be times when the strategies are not working. Don’t fret, we will work it out and develop a plan to succeed.

SKILL ACQUISITION

At Cub Creek Therapy, I work on developing skills to increase independence and self-advocacy.  Expanding on and acquiring new skills is the backbone of behavioral therapy. This can entail a variety of areas:

  • Increasing independence in tolerating denials (sorry, you can’t have that toy at Target),

  • Dressing one-self, initiating and completing non-preferred tasks (yep, we can work on chores/homework)

  • Leaving the playground, going to the grocery store, self-care, play skills

  • Increasing language and communication, social skills and much more.

BEHAVIOR INTERVENTION

BIP

Some of the questions we may ask…

Why is our child having meltdowns, refusing to eat certain foods, hitting or throwing items and much more.

That is the question I strive to answer, "WHY". Whenever someone speaks to me about challenging behaviors,  I am not focused on WHAT the challenging behaviors looks like. Rather, my focus is on "Why" are we engaging in these challenging behaviors".

We begin by collecting information and data to figure out why your child is engaging in these challenging behaviors. Once we figure out the "Why", we create an intervention plan to teach your child appropriate replacement skills. In addition, I will equip you with the strategies to help your child increase using their replacement skills while decreasing challenging behaviors.

Our goal is to build your child’s skills so they no longer engage in challenging behaviors and are able readily access their environment.

Home and Community Based Therapy

At Cub Creek Therapy, I believe in the importance of working on skills within the child’s natural environment. It is imperative for the generalization of skills across family members; home is where we are the most comfortable. If we are struggling with the morning and bedtime routine, let me come and be a part of these routines to see why we are struggling.  Is brushing your teeth, washing dishes, putting your things away, staying on task or completing school work a challenge? Let’s work on these skills at home. Maybe we have a hard time sharing toys or playing with our siblings? Let create opportunities to work on these skills in your child’s natural environment.

Do we struggle eating our meals at the table? Let us have a meal together. Maybe trying new foods is not your thing, we can work on that too.  Are community outings a struggle? Do we get upset when we are not permitted to buy a toy or piece of candy?  Do we wonder off while shopping or at the park? Maybe we are being unsafe in the parking lot or while walking in the community.

ASSESSMENT

Assessment begins on day one. The day you welcome me into your home, I begin the assessment process. I ask questions, observe and use standardized assessment tools. Assessment is on-going. The different assessment tools are used to create an intervention plan that is unique to your child and fits your family needs.
